In 1999, through assets replacement, China Resources obtained the right for use of more than 2700 mu land in the coastal areas of Shimei Bay and revitalized the Shimei Bay project that was dormant for many years. The same year, China Resources registered a fully owned project company in Hainan Province – China Resources Hainan Shimei Bay Tourism & Development Co., Ltd. (referred to as “Shimei Bay China Resources” hereinafter), and was committed to the Shimei Bay scenic area development and construction.
To make reasonable use of this valuable resource of Shimei Bay, in June 2001, Shimei Bay China Resources specially engaged Scott Wilson Company – a world leading planning company – for overall planning and design of Shimei Bay. The project takes “nature, ecology, environmental protection, and culture” as its theme clew, aiming at building Shimei Bay into an international eco-tropical coastal holiday resort, providing domestic and overseas tourists with high-quality tourism experience.
The whole area is divided into three functional sub-areas (tourists resort subarea, VIP resort subarea, and the auxiliary facility subarea) and eight holidaymaking subareas with specific features (Zongying Lake subarea, Shangu Lake scenic subarea, ecological and cultural attraction subarea, maritime activity center, coastal leisure subarea, valley canal subarea, coastal scenic subarea, and eco-island subarea).
In April 2003, Hainan Provincial Government approved that Shimei Bay China Resources would be the main developer of the 12 square kilometers resort area of Shimei Bay to implement uniformed planning, uniformed development, uniformed investment promotion, and uniformed management.
While maintaining its non-carved primitive styles and life features, luxurious top-class hotels are scattered in the coconut forests in the resort area of Shimei Bay.
